24/02/2003

24 February 2003 - 120 Esso stations were closed down across the UK this morning by more than 300 Greenpeace volunteers protesting Esso's power over the US Government, fuelling war and global warming.

Another 100 people blockaded the entrance to Esso's UK headquarters in Surrey. Some of them are now on the roof and have hung a banner.

Esso said that it gave its 1000 workers the day off for "safety reasons" because people were on the glass roof. However, Greenpeace was later contacted by glass roofing specialists saying that there would be no safety problems whatsoever.

A new Greenpeace report, released today, shows how oil addiction is fuelling the drive to war and the role Esso has played.
