WMO press release

GLOBAL EXTREME WEATHER: A SUMMARY

August 4 2003 The Portuguese Government has declared a state of not just emergency, but calamity, as forest fires have engulfed one third of the country.

One local villager involved in fighting the blazes told the BBC that no-one had seen fires like this in living memory. The fires have been brought about by exceptionally dry and hot weather conditions.

August 2003 France has been hit by forest fires, as it too suffers from record temperatures. Technicians doused the Fessenheim nuclear power station, near Strasbourg, with cold water to prevent it overheating

August 2003 Rail speed restrictions were imposed in the UK amid fears that tracks might buckle in the heat, as weather officials said midweek temperatures could surpass the record of 37.1C (98.8F).

WMO release: This year's wheat harvest in the Czech Republic, already hit by poor winter weather, was predicted to plummet to 2.7m tonnes - down from nearly 4m tonnes last year.

At least 1400 people died in the unusually high pre-monsoon temperatures in India.

Flooding and mudslides from a cyclone killed 300 in Sri Lanka.

In the USA, May was a record month for tornadoes, killing 41 people.
