Climate change could pose "serious problems'' for the capital without action to curb greenhouse gases, London Mayor Ken Livingstone warned today. He joined Environment Minister Michael Meacher and local authority leaders at a Local Government Association conference which aims to focus on the work councils can do to lower harmful fumes and cut the chances of flooding.In his keynote speech Mr Livingstone was due to say: Mr Meacher is to launch a new guide "Community Leadership and Climate Change'' which will advise councils on how they can work more effectively to help tackle climate change. Steps councils can take include: Councillor Sandy Bruce-Lockhart, LGA environment chair, said: "Local councils have a leading role to play in raising awareness of climate change and in bringing forward measures to reduce and mitigate its effects. At the same time, local authorities must put their own houses in order by introducing planning, transport and energy reduction policies to help address the primary cause of climate change.''
