Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions to StopEsso: Q: How can I get involved in the Stop Esso campaign? A: The first thing you can do is stop buying anything from Esso. If you're in the UK, you can sign up to get active in your local area by simply typing in your postcode and picking an Esso station. Then, if you join a local discussion list, you can find others in your area who also support the campaign. Order a campaign pack, and sign up to our monthly email campaign update. If you're outside the UK try visiting the international StopEsso page to see if there's a campaign in your own country. But you can still subscribe to our monthly email update and get a campaign pack to spread the word in your neighbourhood. Q: Aren't all oil companies responsible for global warming? A: Yes they are, but Esso stands out by far. This is because Esso:
Q: Why would Esso as an oil company support a Treaty that will eventually put it out of business? A: There are booming industries developing in wind, wave and solar power and green fuels for transport. In order to prevent catastrophic global warming we need to keep the earth's fossil fuels underground and ensure that they are never used. Indeed, why should millions be at risk of losing their lives through the drought, disease, floods and storms that global warming will bring about, just so that Esso can make more profits? Q: What about Esso and the War? A: A good question. Esso has done more than any other to keep the USA hooked on oil. If Bush was acting on climate change, he wouldn't need to go after Iraqi oil. Esso (ExxonMobil in the USA), is only likely to get its hands on Iraqi oil if there's a regime change. And top financial analysts say that Esso may be in "pole position" to take advantage of a changed-regime Iraq. For more information see the Greenpeace report (PDF) Q: Where should I buy petrol if I need to? A: It is a shame that no UK petrol stations offer genuine green fuels that do not cause global warming. We can't advise you where to buy petrol, but we can encourage you to vote with your wallet and boycott Esso! Q: How can I get campaign materials to use in my area? A: From this website! There are downloadable leaflets and
materials. You can also order hardcopy materials by going to our Home
Page, and signing up. Q: I'm not from the UK and I would like to know which companies I could boycott to support this campaign? A: Esso/ExxonMobil is a global brand, operating world-wide, in over 200 countries. In the US Exxon and Mobil trade separately but is in fact the same company. Outside of the US, Esso or Mobil are the usual brands. In Canada Esso trades as Imperial Oil. Go to www.stopesso.org to find out about campaigns in other countries. Q: What about the supermarkets? Doesn't Tesco have a deal with Esso? A: Tesco and Esso have a new joint venture where Tesco sells groceries and Esso sells petrol. But if you're boycotting that Esso station, it's unlikely you'll visit Tesco too. But at Tesco's own-brand petrol stations, they've assured us they don't get their petrol from Esso. |
