11/07/2001 Statement from Bianca Jagger on the International Day of Action against ExxonMobil"Today, people throughout the world have joined together to sound the alarm bells against the world's largest company ExxonMobil (Esso). "I call on everyone to stand up to George W Bush's attempts to sabotage the Kyoto protocol the only international treaty designed to combat dangerous climate change. "People around the world must stand up and say no to Bush and to his entourage of oil barons and energy corporations. We must say no to ExxonMobil, the largest and most profitable company in the world, whose executives believe that human survival is simply not economic. ExxonMobil's short-sighted vision, putting short term profits before human survival and safety of the planet, is driving President Bush's Kyoto policies. "What right does George W Bush have to sabotage the only global warming treaty? He has, in effect, declared environmental war against the planet. Our lives and the future of our children will be threatened and compromised if his policies succeed. "Texas, under Bush's regime, became the most polluted state in the union. Now he wants to extend those devastating policies to the rest of the US and to the world. Already the governments of Japan and Australia have said they will not ratify Kyoto without the US. "Climate change is the single biggest threat facing the earth today. The UN International Panel on Climate Change, the most comprehensive study, warns of the potential for large scale and irreversible climate changes including devastating droughts, floods, violent storms, in addition to the spread of cholera and malaria. The Earth's temperatures could rise by as much as 10.4 degrees F (5 degrees C) over the next 100 years. "The sad truth about climate change is that if we wait until the catastrophic effects are staring our childrens children in the face, it will be far too late to do anything meaningful about it. The time to act is now. We can all do something to stop global warming. Lets begin by boycotting ExxonMobil (Esso) products" SIGN ON TO THE CAMPAIGN AT STOPESSO.COM Bianca Jagger, London 11 July 2001
