13/07/2001 On Thursday Sept. 6, fabric hosts a very special event in support of the Stop Esso campaign. Line-up bulletins will begin from next week and a diverse gathering of djs, bands and live acts have already pledged their support. In addition to Fabric artists, rooms curated by Dazed & Confused magazine and the Arthrob collective will represent the wider spectrum of music and beyond. October's issue of Dazed & Confused will feature editorial in support of Stop Esso.Stop Esso is a coalition of Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and People & Planet, a student activist group formerly known as Third World First. It has started a boycott against Esso, intending to prise apart its relationship with US President George W. Bush. In December 1997 the world's industrialised countries agreed to reduce emissions of global warming gases as a first step towards stabilising the world's climate, with a particular focus on carbon dioxide produced by burning oil, coal and gas. They agreed the 'Kyoto Protocol', an international treaty which sets targets for cutting countries' CO2 emissions. For the treaty to come into force, 55 countries must ratify it i.e. agree to be legally bound by its terms and introduce laws to cut emissions. In March this year, just weeks after his inauguration, President George W. Bush announced that the US would not ratify the Kyoto Protocol. He declared it "dead", even though America is the world's largest polluter, emitting a quarter of global CO2. Texas-based Esso (ExxonMobil), leading the oil lobby against the Kyoto Protocol and a major backer of Bush's election campaign, fully supported the move. So far, the campaign has gained media and celebrity attention and a selection of key quotes are included on the accompanying document. Stop Esso has received 7000 pledges of support and more than half a million website hits. This event aims to raise awareness for the campaign within club culture and your support will be greatly appreciated. Please reply if you require additional images, with the correct e-mail address to which they should be sent.
