01/12/2001 Stop Esso Day has been a huge success, with thousands of people turning out in force across the country and boycotting 300 Esso garages, all very peaceful and friendly, Stop Esso said today.
“Today Esso has been on the sharp end of the biggest global warming protest the UK has ever seen. And this is just the beginning. If Esso chooses to wreck the climate, we can all choose to boycott Esso,” she said. Drivers approaching Esso garages were greeted by boycotters, some dressed in tiger and polar bear suits. Members of the public spontaneously joined in the protests, including a 70-year old man out doing his morning shopping. Hundreds of Esso garages have been targetted across the UK. Some notable anecdotes are: * Bath – Due to the 25 protesters persuading customers to boycott the garage the owners dropped the price of diesel by a penny. Staff admitted takings were down. * South London – Brixton Road station closed its pumps for a few hours, allowing campaigners to leaflet the drivers looking for petrol. Shooters Hill Road, Blackheath - police driving past the garage saluted the protesters. * Bradford - Adelaide Service Station, Manchester Road – the garage owner called the police and when the police turned up they told the campaigners they supported the boycott. * Bridgnorth, Shropshire - a mother organised an event in memory of her 21-year-old son, a passionate Greenpeace supporter, who died four weeks ago. Esso has used its power and wealth to run a ten-year campaign of dirty tricks to sabotage the Kyoto global warming treaty, the only international agreement to stop global warming. Esso did more than any other company to ensure that President Bush ditched the Kyoto treaty. Esso continues to deny that fossil fuels are causing climate change and spends zero dollars on renewable energy. Stop Esso Day was organised by a coalition of Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and People & Planet, with active support from The Green Party, Plaid Cymru, Transport 2000 and hundreds of members of the public already boycotting Esso. Notes to editors: Photos of the Esso boycott are available from AFP and PA
