08/03/2002 StopEsso wins debate against Esso at Kingston Upon Thames, South West London.Kingston Councillors voted to join the Esso boycott this week after inviting senior staff from the oil giant and the StopEsso campaign to address their monthly meeting. Esso sent UK PR Executive Gordon Sawyer to the meeting of the Agenda 21 committee but councillors were persuaded after StopEsso outlined Esso's dirty tricks campaign to block US efforts to prevent global warming. The resolution was proposed by Kingston Labour councillor Andy Hall, and local Friends of the Earth group member Penny Baker on behalf of StopEsso. It was the first time Esso has debated the issue with the boycott campaign. The StopEsso coalition, comprising Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and student group People & Planet, told councillors that Esso gave Bush’s Republican party more money than any other oil company, (except Enron), and had worked for the last ten years to undermine the Kyoto protocol on global warming. When President Bush pulled the US out of the agreement last year Esso publicly congratulated him. StopEsso is calling for a boycott until Esso stops undermining international efforts to protect the climate. In 2000 Esso made profits of $17.7bn but didn’t invest a single cent in the development of renewable energy. The StopEsso campaign is supported by Bianca Jagger, Rory Bremner and car drivers up and down the country. The campaign will present its case to any council that seeks to follow Kingston’s lead. Rob Gueterbock, who addressed the councillors for StopEsso, said after the meeting: “By refusing to buy from Esso, local authorities are rightfully taking their fight against global warming through to their supply decisions. They are reinforcing international moves to get the US back into the fold on Kyoto. StopEsso congratulates Kingston councillors on their stance. Communities across the UK are now considering how best to cut C02 emissions and support the UK government's commitment to stopping global warming. Joining the Esso boycott is a good way to start.” The issue will now go before the council cabinet for consideration on March 26th.
